Beginning of Our 4 Year Anniversary Eurotrip - Santorini, Greece

We are going to try to blog all of our Eurotrip adventures so we will remember it better and to share our fun trip with family and friends. Stay tuned for the posts of each city we visited as well as imbedded pics.

First stop: Santorini!

Arrived evening of February 24th, 2011

We arrived on a cold, blustery night after a layover in Athens to end our long journey from Singapore. Luckily, the Aegean Airline staff strike was the day before and we weren’t affected. Our booking was with Caldera Studios, but we were quickly greeted by Fannis who owns and operates Aroma Suites next door. The Caldera Studios was under renovation, so he put us up in another room at his place down the street. He was surprised to hear we wanted a single bed instead of two twins, but after some discussion he agreed to give us a room with a full-sized single bed. The room was well below our expectations, but at this point we were willing tired and wanted to go to sleep. He had noticed our disappointment, and agreed to let us use the honeymoon suite the following night.

After a rough night’s sleep, we awoke to a beautiful rainbow cascading into the waters of the caldera. The sky was overcast, but it was amazing to look down the cliff and see the rainbow end in the ocean. We enjoyed a lovely Greek breakfast on the patio overlooking the caldera complete with Illy coffee, paninis, coffee cake, and Greek yogurt (we thought it was cream cheese). Milo’s Greek cousin decided to join us for breakfast, so we already captured the touristic “Santorini cat” photos. We hiked back towards the town center of Fira, and stopped along the road at a cute souvenir store where we bought some beautiful blue domed cathedral oil paintings and some knickknacks. We ate gyros at Lucky’s and tried the local Mythos beer before taking the bus to Oia where we spent the afternoon being chased by a pack of dogs. The bus ride was about 15 minutes through windy mountainside roads overlooking the island’s Eastern, convex coast. Heather spotted an old, overturned car in the bottom of one of the ravines, which didn’t settle our stomachs from the driver’s careless attitude. He was smoking a cigarette with one hand, talking on the cell with the other, and driving with who knows what. Oia lies on the Northern tip of the crescent shaped island, and is one of the most famous spots for seeing the iconic blue-domed cathedrals and thatch-roofed windmills. The bus drops off in the city square, which isn’t more than a small parking lot with a one grocery shack and small coffee shop. We started our way down the corner alley leading to the coast; Heather was sure we would get lost. The alleys are surprisingly easy to navigate, but you have to watch your step for the occasional, yet surprisingly common dog poo. We met our first dogs outside a bookshop where a local had placed a bowl of food. Our dog count continued to grow as they announced to each other that “the tourists are here!” After a few hours of photo-snapping under the umbrella, we had gathered a total of six dogs that followed our every move. “Don’t make eye contact was our motto.” One even tried to bite Ben, as it attacked his baggy jeans begging for food. We had to hide out for a while in the local grocery store, hoping they would find other prey. Unfortunately, the other prey never came. It was nice being the only tourists in such a beautiful town. The sun decided to come out so we could take some better pictures, as if our picture count wasn’t high enough yet. To warm up we had some hot cocoa at the local coffee shop where the locals didn’t seem to mind the “No Smoking” signs pasted everywhere. They had to stop their card game just to open the door, since the place was the size of a large closet. But it provided plenty of warmth until the bus arrived for the return to Fira. Upon our arrival in Fira, we decided to check on our “honeymoon suite” status. Fannis didn’t seem to remember his promise, but eventually gave us an even better honeymoon suite because he felt so badly. Sometimes, it pays to complain! He opened up some of his homemade wine and welcomed us to our new and improved room, complete with an in-ground jacuzzi and canopy bed. Fannis recommended the neighboring Ellis Restaurant for dinner. We enjoyed eggplant dip with bread, mastello cheese, mousaka, and grilled pork, all accompanied with a jug of red house wine. Heather’s favorite was the eggplant dip, but the mastello cheese was also memorable. The waiter was kind enough to give us Chocolate Mousse on the house, and a local sitting at the table next to us bought us another jug of wine! He ended up being quite a talker, and even asked for our Facebook info. Heather quickly came up with Ben Jackson and Heather Breuer as aliases to avoid any stalking. Looking back though, he was a friendly local carpenter who was probably lonely during the off-season. We ended up using his recommended car rental company, Mano’s, the following day.

The following morning, we enjoyed another amazing breakfast on the caldera before heading to Mano’s to pick up our Red Suzuki Swift. After putting about 8 Euros of gas in the tank, we “swiftly” reached Pyrgos and continued up the steep road to the tallest point of Santorini, Moni Profiti Ilia. From here, we could see the entire island. After descending, we drove to the black beach of Kamari. This beach was a little run-down and unkempt, but beautiful when facing the sea. We continued next to the red beach of Akrotiri where we found a disappointing boulder coastline due to the high tide. Akrotiri lies near the Southern tip, where we continued on to see the lighthouse. From this angle, you can see the “white” island that is usually hidden by the larger black island in the center of the caldera. We began our return trip to Fira with a stop at the second black beach, Perissa. This was clearly the nicer of the two black beaches, and actually had some restaurants and stores open for business. But the recommended restaurant was overpriced, and we were hankering for another cheap gyro. After returning to Mano’s, we still had some gas left in the tank, so Ben decided it would be a good idea to try our luck taking better pictures in Oia with the sunshine. We quickly realized we had chosen the slower, scenic route, and at the halfway mark the Tank Empty light came on! After climbing a few more hills up to Oia, we quickly made a detour back towards Fira to find a gas station. Luckily, we were able to coast to the station halfway back from Oia to Fira. Heather was pretty worried we would run out of gas with no one to help and miss our flight to Athens, but Ben lived to see another day! Fanni's Russian carpenter drove us to the airport, and we continued our anniversary trip in Athens…

Yet again...

...We fail to keep up our blog...I never thought life in Singapore would be so BUSY! "Busy, busy, busy" is all we tell people who ask how are doing over here. It is definitely a good busy that we are so thankful for! But a break would be nice :) I know my sweet husband deserves one more than I do for all of his hard work and long hours he puts in for us to be here.

This Thursday we leave for a mission trip to Cambodia, more specifically, The Shelter of Love Orphanage in Kampong Thom, Cambodia. We are thrilled and nervous at the same time as we prepare for this amazing, new opportunity God has given us! Neither of us have ever been on a mission trip before, even though it has always been something I have had a passion to do for as long as I can remember. God has finally presented it to us and we are so thankful that He is trusting us to witness to 50 children! We will be there a total of 4 days, which won't be long enough. The Orphanage is in the middle of nowhere and receives all of its power from a small generator! They are looking to convert the power source to solar power in the future, but they don't have enough funds for it yet. We aren't sure what to expect when we arrive, but we trust that God will guide us! We are so anxious to help out in any way that we can and to help teach the children about our amazing God! Please pray that God will use us to His glory and that we can leave His love with the children! We will update as soon as we return with how it went!

Life In The Fast Lane

We have made it 6 months in Singapore so far! I believe that is some kind of milestone worth noting! Like I always say, time is just FLYING by here! I never know if that is a good or bad thing...At least it is getting us back home faster! Not that we hate it here, we are just ready to get back home to everything we miss.

Round two of family visits included my Dad, Stepmom, little sister Holly, and brother Kemper who arrived at the end of June and stayed for two weeks. I was very surprised at how well they did with the jet lag! Kemper ran as fast as he could over to us when he saw Ben and I at the airport. It was so cute! It was so great to see everyone after a long 7 months!! We took them all over Singapore doing the usual, Singapore Flyer, Zoo, Clarke Quay, Marina Bay, Little India, Chinatown, Orchard, etc. etc. I was trying to get my Dad to try durian the whole time but he never would :( Everyone seemed to really like naan! And the fresh squeezed juices - green apple and lemon with sugar! YUMM!!
The highlight of the trip was our trip to Phuket for 4 days. We stayed at the JW Marriott which was a beautiful hotel! We mainly relaxed by the beach and swam in the pool for the first day and enjoyed the amazing breakfast buffet every morning! Why else do you go on vacation right? They even had REAL honey straight off the honeycomb at the breakfast buffet!! We also enjoyed $12 1 hour massages on the beach!

The next day we took a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands by the bumpiest speed boat ever! It was totally worth it though! It is absolute paradise there! I went four years ago with the Thailand study abroad trip, but my best friend Kristie lost all of the pictures we took as soon as we got back so we never got to show people the pictures! We overcompensated for the loss by taking 800 though! Thank God for digital cameras! We snorkeled in about 4 different locations around the Phi Phi Islands and got to see lots of parrot fish, puffer fish, barracudas, sea anemones (yes I had to google that to find out the correct spelling), and tons of other fish I had no idea what their names were! But it really made Ben and I want to get our diving certifications! We also got to see where they filmed the James Bond movie "Golden Gun" as well as "The Beach". I had seen where they filmed "The Beach" 4 years ago but this time they let us actually hang out on the beach there! It was kind of disappointing, though, because there was so much trash everywhere. The public had ruined one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! I hope they can close it down for a couple of years to clean it up. UGH! Anyways, here are a few pictures of this paradise! Pictures never do it justice, I don't care how good the camera is!

Another part of our Phi Phi Island adventure involved Monkey Island. They dropped us off on the island where all of these crazy wild monkeys were running around stealing the bananas straight out of peoples hands! NO FEAR!
We ventured to Patong Beach one evening for some night market action and a buffet dinner at the Holiday Inn along the beach. We weren't impressed with the market here, they wanted USD$30 for a FAKE pair of Billabong board shorts! COME ONE CRAZIES!!! That's how much a REAL pair is in the States! They think we don't know this! They weren't willing to negotiate lower either so we didn't purchase anything. We did come across an Indian Pancake stall (which Kristie and I have been craving since we left Thailand 4 years ago) so we of course got a chocolate and vanilla one! They are similar to a crepe, but so much better!!! Don't know why! It might be how they fold them?
Sunset @ Patong Beach

There wasn't a celebration for the 4th of July in Phuket, big surprise. We were hoping for some fireworks though. No such luck. We celebrated Holly's 7th birthday on the 5th of July at the hotel. She ate an entire donut the size of her face for her cake :) I didn't have my camera for that one :( Ben and I watched one of the most beautiful sunsets we had ever seen on the beach our last night we were there. God paints amazing pictures for us! My husband gets to take credit for these beautiful pictures he took :)
We headed back to reality in Singapore and spent the last day with the family at Chinatown for some last minute gift shopping. It was so great spending time with them and getting closer to them. Holly and Kemper grow so much inbetween the times we see them, I still can't believe they are already 7 and 5! They are so adorable and say the cutest things! It was also a great time to become closer to Dad and Elorra. We are so grateful that they were able to come visit us across the world!! We can't wait to see everyone again in a month when we visit the States!!! They better have some juicy steaks on the table as soon as we arrive :) Joking - kind of!

God Bless,
H & B

"Stick It Together With Tape!"

Flight of the Conchords is our new favorite TV show. It is hilarious! If you haven't seen it before, it is about these two guys, Jemaine and Bret (or "Brit"), who are from New Zealand and move to New York to pursue their band. In every episode they sing and play a couple of their own songs that have to do with the situations they get themselves into. Apparently they actually toured and came to Austin a while back. I would love to see them one day! They are too funny! Here is one of our favorite songs by them:

First Family Visit in Singapore

My Mom and Jack (brother) came to visit us for a week in Singapore. It was the first time we had seen family in 6 months which is the longest I think we have both ever been without seeing our families! After 30+ hours of traveling across the world to get here we welcomed them to Singapore with lots of hugs and tears!

We took them to our favorite sushi place, Koh Grill, for lunch to start the trip off. It was funny to watch my mom try to use chopsticks. The sushi chef had to make her cheater chopsticks, which were still hard for her to use! Ben and I have become semi-pros since we have to use them almost every time we eat out. They enjoyed it so much we went back one more time before they left.

My mom, brother and I at Koh Grill (Ben took the picture :) )

We then took them to Clarke Quay for dinner where we had a few Pump Room 1-for-1 beers and some Satay. They were having some kind of celebration with a drum line and guys dressed up in funny costumes in the middle of Clarke Quay so we got to hear/see some of the action.

Speaking of funny costumes...while we were walking back to our condo, we stopped off at an outdoor theater where they were having a dance competition. It was a very confusing dance show...see if you can find the girl in this group....

You can't, they are all MEN!!! Very disturbing! I could have sworn at least one of them was a female....but NOOO!

We took them to the famous Singapore Zoo which is always fun! I'm sure we will be taking the zoo trip a few more times before the year is over to show all of our other family who is coming to visit! We watched the Elephants at Work and Play Show and the baboons fight and chase each other around. We also got to pet a tree kangaroo, hold some butterflies, and see the lions being fed. My mom even got her eye scratched by a mean little monkey that was hanging out in a tree next to us!

My mom and I with the tree kangaroo

Elephants at Work and Play Show...he's pretty good!

This little guy was so cute with his pot belly!

We then took them to Marina Bay to show them the Merlion, Esplanade, and all of the famous tall buildings. We rode the Singapore Flyer and were lucky enough to have our own private capsule! I told my mom how the Singapore Flyer got stuck a couple months ago and she wouldn't believe me, even though I was telling the truth! We also teased her and told her that it goes really fast, which is really a lie...it takes 30 minutes to make the full trip around.

We made a trip to Chinatown and Little India of course. We even took them to Dehli our favorite Indian restaurant here that is owned by this nice, old Indian man who always remembers us! We also had a fajita and margarita night where we made our own flour tortillas (they are very comparable to the HEB flour tortillas! It is our specialty :) ) Ben and I have to improvise here without good mexican food and I'd say we do a pretty good job!

Jack was very intrigued by all the funny signs around Singapore. He took tons of pictures of them. Here are a few of them:

They use a lot of cartoons to convey their messages here...

They had to have been worn out with all of the places we were taking them at this point! But we decided to take a day trip to Sentosa Island for some beach fun. It was nice to relax and swim in the "ocean with no waves"! We went to the southernmost point on the Asian continent.

Giant Merlion

The highlight of the trip had to be when we took them to see EIC, our favorite band in Singapore, at Wala Wala. It was definitely Jack's lucky night! Some random guy bought him a beer (odd) and the band members invited Jack up on stage to play his own song with them!

Us with Jack and Rai from EIC

Jack on stage with EIC playing his song "Higher Trial"!

So how did Jack get to play with them? Well, after EIC played their first set they came over and started talking to us, probably because we were the only blond, Americans in the entire venue. They were asking us where we were from and when my mom said Austin, TX they immediately started talking about SXSW and ACL, which we were surprised that they even knew what that was considering they are from Singapore! Anyways, we started talking about live music and how Jack (my brother) plays guitar in a band and they invited him to play one of his songs up on stage with them! It was so cool! And Jack did awesome! Here is the video of my brother Jack playing "Higher Trial" with Jack-the guitarist, Joe-the drummer, and Melvin-the bassist (Rai, the other guitarist, sat out so my brother could play his guitar). Keep in mind none of them had ever heard this song before that my brother wrote!

We had a great time with them and were so glad they could come out to see us! My Dad, Stepmom, little brother and sister will be here in a few more days for our second round of family! It is so great to see family but it makes us miss home a lot more :(

Stay tuned for more family visit updates!

God bless,
The Jackmans
